If your boss is special…

Our supervisors influence our work and achievements, that’s why it is very important to consider your chef’s peculiarities and correct your behavior. A rational, consistent and logical boss is a great luck for the employers, and if the boss is talented, inconsistent and an artistic personality, we should be always alert to follow changes in the mood and streams of ideas. The strategy of communication with such a supervisor is of a great importance especially during the trial period.

First of all, it must be mentioned that the perspective to come across a genius is not everybody’s fortune. An artistic boss is more likely to be met in the certain companies connected with art – advertising agencies, publishing houses, mass media, design studios and so on. But it is not much of a risk if you consider your supervisor’s peculiarity. And if you learn working with such a person it will bring more pleasure than complications.

Order is in the first place. Talented people are usually absent-minded, non-obligatory, have difficulties with concentration and that’s why they appreciate when there are walking note-books and speaking micro-processors next to them. Try to become an irreplaceable assistant stocking the papers and reminding about “where we stopped” and what needs to be done. Of course, you should not count on being his/her right hand from the very first day – it is necessary to be on the right way.

Fix! It would not be a bad idea to have a note-book, because if a person gives away ideas, who cares what he /she is – a boss or a cleaning-lady! It is precious and should not be wasted. Besides, writing down ideas of your genius chef, you can better understand his/her thoughts and become adherents which will make communication easier.

High level exchange! Do not be afraid to speak out and demonstrate your own abilities – talented people are rarely haughty and can appreciate your strong points. Psychologists say that real geniuses do not guess that they are unique. Of course, your creative chef might answer to your painfully born ideas that it is nonsense, and even worse. But this is his relation to the idea not to you. In a minute he / she will forget all about it but if you guess using your creativity you have the chance to get into the rows of the special colleagues.

Logic and facts. Your knowledge of information and logical consistence in your speech will be appreciated by every boss and moreover by a talented one. So, suggesting even the bravest ideas, argue them maximally. Masterly gathered facts give away a good worker and in case with the boss who cannot work hard and consistently himself, play an important role of a solid ground.

Become a rock! Try not to respond to emotional outbursts and changes in your chef’s mood. If he / she is dissatisfied with your job, there is nothing personal here – the whole thing is not about you but about your job. That’s why calm down and communicate, ask what needs to be redone, suggest the other way of working. Sometimes a creative boss can be very unreserved: some use even swear-words, but remember, it is not about you. Try to understand those outbursts: unbalanced nervous system is a big problem as it is.

If your chef is obsessed over his / her geniality… It is more difficult if your boss thinks only about his geniality. Remember, the best tactics which always works here is flattery, and you should always use it. Flatter great discoveries, agree with unique decisions and super ideas if it does not do harm to the company, of course. But if your boss’s geniality is too much, try to use creative gears to stop him/her. There is surely somebody in the company whom he/she trusts more than the others. Talk to that trustee, it might be that the person will be able to say gently that though the step is undoubtedly brilliant but it might have a side effect.

If the person is really inclined to overestimate himself/herself, as a rule, he/she thinks that he/she is talented in everything. The subordinates should take it into account that they are supposed to laugh at their boss’s every joke – they are funny by definition. It is appropriate to admire his/her looks all the time and to ascribe the company’s or department’s successes to the talented supervisor. And watch your own ambitions, you can get promoted only through service to your boss’s interests. To embody your idea, try to make it look as if it is your supervisor’s. However wrong it might seem, such behavior is just a necessary condition for survival. And besides, why not make somebody feel good?

Every boss is unique in his/her own way, that’s why the most important thing is to listen and watch your chef’s reactions to your actions. Notice what irritates your boss, makes him/her angry. And do not show off your temper. It is possible that after a certain time, you will be allowed to, but so far your task is to go round the sun in circles. If you do it well, you will get warm, if you do not, you will burn down.
